Rule for using of „nymphing fishing line“
FIPS-Mouche likes to clarify, before the start of the championships, the description of a Fly Fishing Line, so there will be NO misunderstandings.
We see a lot of so called „Nymph fishing lines“ appearing on the market and it is our duty to inform our members about the definition of a Factory made FLY FISHING LINE and to set standards.
We believe FIPS-Mouche is making a good decision to create a standard, and that the quality of the competition will benefit from maintaining a sense of fly fishing without sacrificing the ability to make ultra-fine presentations for the competitors. The rule was set as follow:
THE ABSOLUTE SMALLEST COATED DIAMETER WE CONSIDER TO BE A FLY LINE PRODUCT IS 0,55 mm (.022”)
Hi fellow anglers,
I understand why this clarification has been made. But I totally disagree on how and when it has been made!
There are numerous problems with this rule. I believe that many DI7 or faster sinking lines are thinner than 0,55mm and they are not anymore legal fly lines in FIPS-Mouche competitions. The same goes with light class lines for dry fly fishing. Also this rule does not clarify which part of the fly line needs to be more than 0,55mm. Are we talking about the thickest point of the line or the thinnest point of the line?
However the biggest issue is that the World Championships are only few weeks away. This is absolutely no time to set new rules that will affect most of the anglers. Rule modifications have been released a long time ago as they should according to FIPS-Mouche rules. This is no time to set new rules or „clarify“ the ones we have. That should have been done seven months ago according to the rules.
Right now, we’re less than three weeks from the World Championships. With this new rule modification I have no idea which lines are legal and which are illegal. I have fished and practiced with the ones I have, but I don’t know if they’re legal or not. I can’t buy any new ones to practice with, cause I don’t know if they’re legal or not. I believe that I’m not the only one.
Why are we even having these „World Championships“ then? The rules get changed just before the competition with absolutely no time for competitors to adapt. Why don’t you just change the rules at the same time so that only 7 ft bamboo rods are allowed.

This competition stuff has become a big BS in my opinnion.
Alot of money thrown arround, some old guys having fun on belaf of the Federation and for the last 10 years since i’m competing besides the friends that we make there’s nothing much about these competitions anyways.
This is also one of the motives why Romania decided not to participate in this year.
Before setting rules over rules over rules over rules we must think of the future of this sport and the competition itself.
There has never been a quest for prizes.
Very very few of the participants in these competition actually established themselves to make a living out of fly fishing.
Instead every year FIPS gets thousands of euros from all the member countries and after more than 20 years it is still ruled like in ex-communist countries.
Voting is a joke, rules are a bad joke and competition flyfishing is just becoming an expensive trip to meet some friends from time to time.
I haven’t noticed any events organized by FIPS-CIPS or any other Federation in order to get people attracted to the sport, in order to promote Fly Fishing or in order to disolve bureaucracy.
Many if not all of the participating countries face difficulties paying the large amounts of money in order to participate in such events.
Because of the way FIPS-CIPS works, it’s impossible to promote flyfishing in ways you can attract sponsors.
Who will actually pay you to go FlyFishing arround the world for free ?!
How can you promote your sponsor in a way to get a real benefit for the money ?
Why is it that most of the rules are made by people who don’t understand anything from the competition world ?
Why is it that ALL the Countries are talking behind close doors the same problems ?
Do you want me to belive that Becoming World Champion in FlyFishing has anything to do with the „SMALLEST COATED DIAMETER“ ?!!?!?! or Microrings or length of the leader ?!
It seems to me that there’s no fun anymore in chasing the French and the Czechs or other nations in the quest for glory.
Where’s the glory?! It’s like paying a very expensive ticket for others to have fun on your back…
It’s not fun anymore…. it’s not what it used to be…

I just measured a DI7 # 7-8 and the diameter is 0,71mm! The Rio Trout LT Ultralight DT 000 F has a tippet size of 0,55mm and is, I believe, the thinnest dry fly line available.
So Mr. Suominen has clearly no idea about sizes. Maybe just measure some?
We did not change a rule, we gave an exact definition on what a fly line is and what is not a fly line.
Yes please confirm where this measure is taken from and does it relate to any other line.
Hi all,
I agree with Jarkko, but just in the opinion that earlier decision would be much more better…
But, I mean in this moment it was a best decision of members FIPS Mouche. As I said I agree maybe little bit later than it was neccessary, but in final it is really good decision.
In my opinion and all members of Czech team those nymphing lines, of which there is talk ARE NOT A FLY LINES. I am sure about it. In my eyes they are just breaded leaders which are not allowed… We as Czech team was prepared do not use those breaded leaders during a championships and if the FIPS Mouche did not make this decision we wanted to speak about it in final during a captains meeting.
I think everybody know as well that I was not supported all these rules changes… I knew it bring all these problems. Many competitors are thinking how to do it different according rules, but still have chance to use all newest very fine nymphing methods with a long leaders for better presentation… If Paul and FIPS Mouche did not made these changes, we need not to speak about these problems… That is all 🙂
I am understanding to them a little bit. They want to keep fly fishing still as fly fishing. They are afraid if the fly fishing is not more a coarse or spinning fishing… But their opinions how to keep it by the rules are not so clever… I think this fear is unfounded. The best competitors are not only nymph fishermans, but they are excellent FLY FISHERMANS who can catch fish by all methods including a dry flies, wet flies, streamers, lake fly fishing, etc. This is my long-term view. And who do not know all these techniques excellent in the best way it can never be among the best in the long term. This is evinced by teams from the Czech Republic, France, Spain, Italy, England, etc. (I am sorry if I forgot for some other :-D)
But as I told, this decision which FIPS Mouche made is in my eyes the best which they can made according a valid rules.
And I would like to congratulate them as well. I am not just a critical against them 🙂
See You soon mates

Hi all,
Like I said in my first comment, I understand why this change or clarification has been made. I also agree with other commenters that it needs to be made as there’s too much gray area in the rules. Now that there has been some explanations why this rule is out just now, I understand the timing a bit better too. Not that I agree with it, but I understand it.
I’m not at home with my fishing gear and not able to measure my fly lines. I will do that when I have the chance and when I have bought the necessary equipment to do so. But I’m relieved to hear that all real fly lines should be legal after this clarification. And I believe this is the case as Mr. Vekemans told us.
However I would still like to question the ability to supervise this rule. Let’s take the Rio Trout LT DT 000 as an example. The diameter of the line is 0,55mm as Mr. Vekemans stated, so it is legal to use. If the controller wants to measure the line with micrometer he must be allowed to do so. However, measuring a fly line which is made from soft material isn’t as simple as is sounds. So the measurement could easily end up showing less than 0,55mm which would make the legal fly line illegal. How is competitor able to prove that the fly line is legal if the controller just „proved“ otherwise? Should all fishing gear be checked and measured before competition and label them as „certified for competition“ to avoid such incidents? Should there be some list of allowed and illegal fly lines and competitors need to prove which line they are using? I understand that the rule is meant for banning „fly lines“ like this for example: http://flyfishingmania.cz/product.php?id_product=403. I’m just hoping that this won’t result in incidents like I just described above where the ones using legal equipment would suffer from it.
See you all in few weeks,
Jarkko Suominen

Do not mistake 0.55cm = 5.5000mm with 0.55mm = 0.055000cm (I did at first 🙂
Exactly Jarkko, exactly 😉 i fully agree with You now. FIPS Mouche must say now, how they want to control it… I think it could be easy… We have an oficial measuring/gauge for beads, size of flies, diameter of flies, etc.
I suggest to made another notch into a gauge of diameter for ex. 0.53 mm, and I think that although the fly lines are soft, the diameter of 0.55 mm will not fit to give in this notch.
But even I would like to returned to my previous post… When I was agreed with this decision of FIPS Mouche about the definition of fly line. I think it is fair to say that I absolutelly disagree with many other decisions.
For example a ban of microrings… Every modern fly fisherman use it on his leader, for any methods – dry fly, wet fly, streamer, nymphing, etc. Everybody know how microring looks 🙂 And I think a clever decision of FIPS Mouche must to say „microring is totaly legal“.
Same heavy body. New method how weighted a body of flies. I do not see a different if in the body of flies are a lead wire or tungsten heavy body. Lot of fly fisherman in whole world are using it in big and deep waters, mainly for nymfing methods when is just one fly allowed… You must be sure that in Czech world championship and about other 90% of competition You need not to use it… On the contrary, we will enjoy very light flies … And these opinions and decisions of Paul and the members of FIPS Mouche are not too clever, I am sorry in my eyes… Another view on it is – we have an measuring/gauge or not? So, it is clear about size, bead, diameter of fly, etc. Is not it? Why we need to ban a heavy body?
So, I think it’s time to prepare our rules not so difficult, but copying a modern trends of fly fishing and even closer to normal in the world of fly fishing as he wrote Adrian.
I am really looking forward if guys from FIPS Mouche will listen these my/our opinions. I have not problem to agree with any clever decisions, But still I can not agree with absurd opinions and decisions (microrings, heavy body, etc.)
Regards
Martin
Interesting comments but I was wondering if anyone can confirm if the RIO Euro Nymph Line is legal under the new rules, as stated above?
Regards, Robbie
I agree with Jarkko that a line such as the one indicated (http://flyfishingmania.cz/product.php?id_product=403) would not be a true ‚flyline‘ and is probably the reason for this ruling.
I also appreciate the requirement for certain definitions and/or clarifications of existing definitions , such as what constitutes a ‚flyline‘, but proper consultation is always best.
That Paul has now confirmed that a factory Rio 000wt line measures 0.55mm at the tip (which for this line is the absolute smallest coated diameter), means that this line is legal and would
not require additional testing.
Having measured my own Rio Euro nymphing line with the orange tip cut off also yields 0.55mm, since this line is based on the 000wt line. Thus this line would also be considered legal ‚out of the box‘.
As long as the rulings are made with the intent of limiting extreme attempts at circumventing defined rules, there should be no reason for a controller to have to measure a flyline thickness, unless it obviously is infringing on the rule.
I agree with Gary regarding the dimensions on the Rio Euro nymphing line however the high visibility orange tips I.e. The 150mm on either end of the line measures less than 0.55mm.
Just to give some help for competitors
The probably thinnest Fly Fishing Lines available:
RIO-Trout LT ultralight DT 0007 is at his thinnest 0,55mm
RIO Euro Nymph line is at his thinnest 0,55mm
Cortland Competition nymph line 120 grain is at his thinnest 0,55mm
Hanak Competition Superlight SL T03F is at his thinnest 0,61mm
and sorry for the ones I forgot to mention!
